Smart split routing vs full-tunnel VPN: what's the difference, and when to use each
Updated
A traditional VPN is full tunnel: every connection goes through the VPN server. If you mainly want AI services on the VPN, that causes problems. AiLane uses smart split routing by default; this guide explains the difference and when to use each.
Common problems with a full-tunnel VPN
Online banking, government services and local apps may ask for extra verification or refuse sign-in when they see an overseas IP.
It can conflict with a work VPN or intranet.
All traffic takes a longer path, so video and video calls may slow down.
Streaming and downloads use up VPN allowance quickly.
How smart split routing works
AiLane uses domain rules to decide which route each connection takes:
AI VPN: supported AI services such as ChatGPT/OpenAI and Claude always use the VPN.
WEB VPN: add services from AiLane's website service list, such as Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. They are off by default and set separately on each device.
Everything else: stays on your normal connection, outside the VPN, and doesn't count towards your allowance.
AiLane maintains and tests the website service list. It does not imply endorsement by those providers or guarantee every feature works.
When to switch to full tunnel
On public Wi-Fi in cafés, airports or hotels, so all traffic uses the encrypted tunnel.
While travelling, when you want every connection to use the same region.
When you want a website that isn't on the list to use the VPN.
In full-tunnel mode, all traffic counts towards the 300 GB monthly allowance.
Which should you choose?
Everyday work, mostly AI tools: smart split routing.
Online banking and government services: smart split routing, which keeps that traffic on your normal connection.
Public Wi-Fi: full tunnel.
Travel: whichever suits you.
Frequently asked questions
Does direct traffic count towards my allowance?
No. In smart split routing only traffic through the AiLane VPN counts; in full-tunnel mode, all traffic counts.
Can I switch modes at any time?
Yes. Switch between smart split routing and full-tunnel mode in the AiLane app whenever you need to.
Is the setting the same on every device?
Website services are off by default and set separately on each device. All devices on the same account share the monthly allowance.
Which devices does AiLane support?
AiLane is currently available as a macOS app, an iOS app (via TestFlight) and an Android app (Android 10 or later, APK from the official website).
