Using Claude in Hong Kong: know the limits and risks first

Updated

Many Hong Kong users want to use Claude, but opening it from Hong Kong usually shows a message that it is only available in certain regions. Unlike OpenAI, Anthropic has recently been enforcing its regional policy noticeably more strictly. This guide sets out the situation and the risks so you can decide.

Anthropic's regional policy

Anthropic's list of supported countries and regions doesn't include Hong Kong, Macao or mainland China. That is Anthropic's business and compliance decision, not a local network block.

Sign-up normally requires phone verification, and Hong Kong numbers may not be accepted.

October 2026: Hong Kong accounts suspended

The South China Morning Post reported in October 2026 that some Hong Kong users who had used Claude through a VPN for months had their accounts suddenly suspended, with an email from Anthropic citing "suspicious signals" and usage-policy violations; some appeals were rejected.

The report also noted that Anthropic hasn't announced a new rule, so it can't be said that every VPN user will be suspended, but the risk is real. The Financial Times reported in July 2026 that Anthropic is targeting access to Claude through VPNs and relay services.

Our advice

  • If you rely on Claude for important work, assume the account could be suspended and back up conversations and files regularly.
  • Have an alternative ready, such as Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Perplexity, which work directly in Hong Kong.
  • Read Anthropic's usage policy and supported-regions information before you decide.

How AiLane handles Claude traffic

In smart split routing, Claude traffic always goes through the VPN and everything else stays on your normal connection. The design keeps AI services separate from everyday browsing and saves allowance; it is not meant to avoid any service's detection.

AiLane offers no detection-evasion features and doesn't change your terms with Anthropic. Using a VPN does not remove the account risks above.

Frequently asked questions

Could Anthropic suspend my account if I use AiLane?

AiLane can't rule it out. Detection and account decisions are controlled by Anthropic, and in October 2026 Hong Kong users reported suspensions after using a VPN.

Can AiLane stop services detecting that I'm in Hong Kong?

No. AiLane is a VPN that sends selected traffic through servers in other regions, but it offers no detection-evasion features.

Which devices does AiLane support?

AiLane is currently available as a macOS app, an iOS app (via TestFlight) and an Android app (Android 10 or later, APK from the official website).

How much does it cost?

HK$68 a month or HK$680 a year, with 300 GB per month and no overage charges. Each eligible new account may first claim one 7-day / 2 GB free trial.
