ChatGPT in Hong Kong: why it's unavailable and your options

Open ChatGPT in Hong Kong and many people see a message that the service isn't available in their region. That usually isn't a problem with your device or network; it is OpenAI's regional policy. This guide covers the situation as of October 2026, your options, and what to know before using a VPN.

Why ChatGPT isn't available in Hong Kong

OpenAI's list of supported countries and territories has never included Hong Kong, Macao or mainland China. OpenAI hasn't publicly explained why, and has said accounts attempting to use its services from unsupported regions may be blocked.

From July 2024, OpenAI also stepped up blocking of API access from unsupported regions. As of October 2026 we have seen no change to the list; check OpenAI's official supported-countries page for the latest.

What you may see

  • The website says the service isn't available in your country or region.
  • The official ChatGPT app may be missing from app stores in Hong Kong, or sign-in may be refused.
  • Developers' API requests are rejected because the region isn't supported.

Your options in Hong Kong

First, use AI services that work directly in Hong Kong. Google began opening the Gemini website and mobile app to all Hong Kong users in March 2026, and Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are also available here.

Second, connect through a VPN to a region OpenAI supports. Many people do this, but keep the following in mind.

Before you use a VPN

  • OpenAI's terms and regional policy still apply. Using the service from an unsupported region is your decision, and accounts may be restricted or disabled.
  • Signing up or subscribing to a paid plan may require a phone number or payment method from a supported region.
  • OpenAI can change its policy and detection at any time. AiLane does not guarantee that any third-party service is available.

How AiLane handles ChatGPT traffic

AiLane uses smart split routing by default: ChatGPT/OpenAI and Claude traffic always goes through the VPN; services such as Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity can be added from AiLane's website service list; everything else, such as online banking, local services and work systems, stays on your normal connection and doesn't count towards your allowance.

So you don't need to send all of your traffic the long way round just for ChatGPT. The 300 GB monthly allowance only counts VPN traffic, and you can switch to full-tunnel mode when you need it.
